Case 2: Fall 2005

Assigned: 4 October 2005

Due: 13 October 2005

To schedule classes your school needs to know about courses that can be offered, instructors and their availability, equipment requirements for courses, and rooms (and their equipment). From the courses that can be scheduled, the schedulers select the courses that will be scheduled. For each of these courses, they schedule one or more sections. The schedulers must assign classes to instructors, rooms, and time slots. The schedulers are constrained by the reality that (1) some courses cannot conflict because many students take them during the same term, (2) the instructor cannot be in two places at the same time, and (3) rooms cannot be double-booked.

Construct a data model to help the schedulers. Specifically, construct a context level data model, and then expand that to include attributes and primary keys. Clearly state any reasonable assumptions.

To facilitate a more concrete understanding of the relationships between the entities, you might find it useful to examine the classes scheduled in the BSA building. Appendix A lists the codes that are used to indicate the type of equipment that may be requested by the instructor for a course.
