Think about your learning experience so far. What activities were most beneficial to your learning so far?

Think about the times you were most disengaged/uninvolved in class. What types of activities were least useful to your learning experience?

What has your experience been about the cases so far? Do the cases add to your learning experiences? If so, how. If not, how would you improve the cases?

What has been your experience with the instructor? What aspects of the instructor's teaching have been positive? What aspects would you ask him to improve on?

the only thing that I haven't liked is the project. I think with the project we could use a few guidelines. The cases are good, and I love the fact that there are so many online quizzes. I don't think that there was anything not useful. I was just tired because I'm not much of a morning person. I think they are beneficial. Especially Case 2, it really made you think about what you were doing and get a better idea of how crucial each assumption is. There really haven't been any negative experiences. He's very nice and respects his students. Also very helpful when students do not understand
I think the second case has been the most beneficial so far. It combined new sofware (Oracle) with group work to enhance the learning. I feel that the first case was the least useful. I do think it was useful but not as useful as the other aspects of the class. The lack of group interaction during the case did not help with experience for futures in the job field. I like the cases so far. I think they add to the learning experience in class. I feel that doing just the online quizzes and exams would not be sufficient material for the class - the cases help in learning and bringing the material together. I feel the Instructor teaches very well. In using examples in class and demonstrations for the cases, he shows what it is like to be in the field. I think class could possibly be better with more interaction.
The cases seem to be the most extensive in the learning process. It is easier to remember material when actually performing the activities as done in the cases. The project has not proved to be very meaningful yet. I am not sure how it pertains to the class, besides the speaking and working in groups aspect. It is interesting to see the outcomes of the case in a group situation as opposed to doing them individually. I think this makes us work harder and helps tune our cooperative skills. Some points feel as though they need a little more explanation. Other than being a little sketchy on the progress project presentations, the lecture is usually clear and to the point.
What I have learned so far that is the most important to me is the different phases of actually analyzing, and some information on each. I am a Co-op at Sherwin-Williams, and my job is actually to be a business analyst. So this information has been extremely useful for me. I Agree with the fact that not many people talk in class, for whatever reason. But this causes everyone else to be fearful of speaking up. I suggest that you have students maybe get bonus points for speaking up or making a useful concept...not like anything big...maybe like half a point, but I think this might encourage students to join in. Or maybe have a contest, like if you answer the most questions in class, you get to exclude a quiz. Those are my thoughts. I like the real world aspect of the cases. It's not just you saying here, heres the data, make a chart. It's alot more of a thinking and analyzing process, which is what this class is all about. So i really think these cases help include the information in a fun and useful way. I really like the instructor, I do hope that he does not get discouraged from the poor participation of students in the class. I like his style of teaching and his views on teaching. This is why I asked him to help in my Independent Reasearch.
Probably when we are working in groups in the labs not participating...sometimes not reading the material before class yes they do...its good to see how you can relate to others in the group i like the way he teaches, very personable. i would like to see maybe more involvment in class, like having us answer a question or two from the book during class time and then go over it
Learning how to use Oracle database tools have been very enlightening and may prove useful in the real world. To some extent the time spent in class going over Oracle case tools. I'm one of those people that tend to learn better by physically doing something. The experience with cases has been a good one, which I believe has added to the class time by giving us real experience using industry case tools which we may be using in the real world after graduation. The instructor has been very receptive to questions and is very entertaining in his lectures/course material.
I think that the first two cases were really beneficial to my learning so far. I cant think of any I really enjoy the cases. They add to my learning experience by introducing me to real world applications that i will need posess. You are the best instructor I have ever had. You do a great job explaining the information to us and you have been really helpful.
the hands on activities where we used the software and had to draw diagrams. None thus far Yes, the cases added to my learning experience because they are the part of class where we get to do more of hands on activities and leanging how to interact with new software and technology. The teacher gives very complete and well said descriptions on the material and makes sure that everyone understands the content before he moves continues with the lecture.
The cases everything we do in class is useful Yes, the cases help me to understand the material better The instructor does a good job of covering the material and doesn't need much improvement.
Getting some hands on experience with CASE tools, and the group project has given me information I didn't know. I really can't think of any. The cases have gone well, they do add to my learning experience because they incorporate a group to think together to solve a problem, which is a skill I'm sure I'll need. Getting the point across and clearly explaining the material is a strong point. Some times its hard to follow whats going on quiz and homework wise because everything is online.
I like that you go over the cases before had. And the cases have been interesting to do. I think that you could keep people more involved in class if you did some of the activities in class as we went through the chapter. I enjoyed doing the cases and learning the new types of software. The experience has been positive. I like the cases. I like that the quizes are online and that we do our homework on vista and wiki.
I enjoyed the the hands on activities that we have did, like the case work and projects with our groups Honestly the class is good, the only time that I might have felt uninvolved in class was Tuesday mornings when I woke up late and felt tired in class. That is all on me though, the class in organized well Honestly I like the cases alot because it just doesn't give you a chance to understand what you are learning but it lets you use the tools in real life experiences for which you will benefit you in the future I like the fact that the instructor is helping us in everway possible for not only getting good grades but helping us to remember what we have and learn and be able to apply that to our work.
I thought that the hands-on CASE projects and our "research" projects were really beneficial to my learning so far. It is good to know that in the future of MIS/CIS careers that we need to learn to work in groups, so working with "strangers" help to learn with totally new people and then continue to work with those same people. Also, I thought the short power presentations given by you and explaining how to do the CASES and projects help. I really couldn't answer this one myself. This is all new stuff to me with very little information already known. I think the CASES help me learn. I tend to get a better grip of understanding when I do hands-on activities, so therefore, I think they are very good to have. Um, I think all is good so far.... Your accent is NOT bad at all. I work with an Indian lady and her accent is 100 times worse. I can actually understand you. You know your stuff. I'm not a big fan of professors/instructors that don't know their material thoroughly.......i.e. you don't READ off the slides. Best instructors = better teachers. You glance then explain. Hmmm, improvement? Nothing yet.........
The presentation is helping with my public speaking. No real complaints here. I enjoy the group that I am in, I think that helps out. Cases make it interesting, because we arent always working by ourselves. Only complaint is sometimes the slides are little burry.
I've really enjoyed working on the cases. I think it's been very educational and interesting how to break complex ideas down into smaller components and arrange them in new ways. I'm not too crazy about working on group projects, since, over the years, I have always ended up doing the lion's share of the work. I also don't like my personal grade being evaluated based on the work (or lack of work) being done by my other group members. After all, in job settings, the person not doing their share of the work gets fired - we can't fire our classmates. However, I'm very pleased with my group members, who are both very hard working, and have helped me tremendously when I haven't been in class due to a sick child at home. Yes, the cases have really added to my learning experience in class. See Question #1 answer for a more in-depth answer. I think Dr. Shanker is terrific. He really knows his stuff, and the way he explains each lesson makes all of the material much more fun to learn. He uses lots of everyday examples to refer us to different aspects of the subject. Dr. Shanker is a fabulous instructor, and he's managed to make what could be a very boring subject (the text book isn't a page turner) into a very interesting topic.
Learning how to use charts, and to show how the data is used in other cases then data tables Case 2, because i didnt really understand what was going on. I tried my best to figure out what was going on but it was very challenging, and i didnt really grip the whole concept until the case was over. The cases help the learning experience a lot. They help in understanding the information. They help a visual learner understand what is happenening in the book, and why the main topics are important. I like the fact that you keep your lectures short, it helps me to pay attention, and obsorb the information. I would like to see more examples.
Not really a specific activity but group work is good, especially with our small group, because you get input from others but the group isn't too big to where you are left out from doing work. Just strictly going over the slides is boring. I like how today you related the chapter to the class and told some jokes. Your perspective on things is funny and makes you unique. Class was helpful in that you showed us how the software works. Much better than sitting in the lab and having you try to explain it because it would have been harder to concentrate. I also think the 2nd case was a little confusing b/c at first I thought it had to be exactly how you described it on the paper but in reality you left it open for us to manipulate. The instructor, as I said before, has a unique way of looking at things which makes him a funny person, which in turn makes class a better experience. Even though you are not foreign, I think any foreign person is funny because they tell jokes/think of things differently. It's refreshing and good to be apart of. Please don't take this offensively.
Although the cases were hard, I think that they were the most beneficial because they were more hands on. Reading about that stuff in the book is alot different than actually using the software and other tools. I just think that the power point slides are really hard to understand/follow, and I tend to then become disengaged. The cases were hard, but also the most beneficial. The hands on use of the software and tools gave me a much better insight into M&IS than I did from reading the book. I think the instructor has been good. He's been helpful when we needed to ask a question. I do wish however that he would've better explained the Project Progress presentation better because it seemed like no one really knew what what we were all to be presenting until the day of, when he went into more detail.
The cases and projects have been very beneficial. They give me a hands on oppurtunity to learn how to do things and to see how they work. The lectures can be a bit tedious, but it is helpful to have the slides available to print and bring to class. The cases do add to my learning. It shows us how people do things in the real world. The instructor has been very good so far. He seems very knowledgeable in his field and his experience helps us to learn.
I like how everything is online in the class so you can choose when you take the quizzes and tests. I think the phone site is also a useful learning tool. I do not feel disengaged. I think the cases do add to the learning experience because it teaches us to work in groups to solve problems. I think the instructor is doing a good job. He explains concepts well and he is very helpful when you ask for help. Some aspects he could improve on are to work on clarifying his instructions.
Hands on Case work definately is more helpful than just seeing it on a powerpoint. I think more lab work would be helpful. Nothing has been unuseful. I def think they help to elaborate on what we learn in class. Helps us practice what we learned hands on. Prof. Shanker has been a very effective with his teaching style and examples. He is very approachable and availability is known. His powerpoints being posted on Vista are helpful so we can go over what we did in class, which I find helpful when it is time to study. I would not ask him to improve on anything.
I would say that working in groups for this project has been, because in most classes they tell you to just read, and take an exam. We are actually working together in this class. Some of the stuff we learn in the book seems useless, but its required. Yes they do, because they involve working with programs that we are going to use in a real job. My expierience with the instructor has been good, very easy to talk to if you have any problems.
When we did some hands on things in class not answered Yes they helped me learn a little bit, however Im not to sure on what I rememeber how to do The instructor is good... very amusing at times
I liked when we did Case 2, I had ERDs in another class before and really didnt understand them. Now I do a lot more. The times I feel most uninvolved in class is when we are not doing hands on experiences. I feel that I learn more by doing cases and other such activities I really like the cases, I feel that they put what you talk about in class into real-life experiences and such. The only thing that I dont like about the cases is sometimes it feels like we dont have enough time for it. I really like Shanker Ive had him before and enjoyed him, I think he makes class fun and entertaining, yet I still leanr a lot from him.
I think working with groups have really helped me out the most. I think when you are going through your slide shows you change slides a little to fast sometimes. They have helped out. Mostly just working and interacting with others to compleate a task. He has shown to the class that he knows what he is talking about when he goes over the topics in class. If I were to pick anything to improve on anything it would be to go a little slower while teaching the class.
the first case was very intresting and i really liked working with it, the group project is fine. the only problem is the groups but ithink it would be better if i have a bad group now so that i can train for how the work place would be. its worth it whene we are just sitting there and just hearing stuff. i would rather have more stuff like the case 1 or even hear about real work experince. and case 2 i really felt it would ba a waste of time for a company to sit down and do it but i am just learning case 1 was great i can see this being somthign usfel in the work place . case 2 no i did not enjoy it i felt i was wasting my tiem in it. maybe it is important if it is on a diffrent process other then the UPS cause it was fairley simple a truck will make many stops and it will have several drivers. maybe if it was about a more complex process. for example if it was about how an amusment park works i think it would have been alot more complex and intresting. it has been a good experince. i really like how he is funny about telling us stuff and i really like it whene he gives us a real work example like the passport story in india i would like it if he made us alot more invloved in the class i know that its not his fault. its ours i think that maybe if we have like a mock work place or a problem to work on it would be more involving maybe one day we would act like a focus group thats trying ot solve a problm for a compny thats would be great other then that he is really good
i liked the use of the lab for the computer programs, like oracle because just telling me what to click on doesn't do much for me... actually using the program helps me out much more. lectures tend to get annoying sometimes. even tho in this class specifically they aren't that long (which is good) all my other classes subject me to the same thing, so after all day of lectures it tends to get tiresom, thats why lab time is better. the cases are a good learning tool. the cases definately add to my learning experience, however i would like to practice with the program b4 having a case due with it. although i like the lab time very much the first time i used the program i had a case due. so to improve the cases i would have an example case created by students to make them more familiar with, for example, oracle b4 something is actually assigned for use with that program. my experience has been a good 1. the background of knowledge with the subject matter has been a plus, because all my questions were answered even if not over course material. i would improve the jokes haha just kidding. i dont think i would improve anything. the way the course is now makes the students learn what needs to be.
Creating the ER Diagrams using Oracle (which I haven't used before) and thinking of examples for each relationship. None of the activities were least useful. i used all of them while completing assignments. I find them very relevant to what we are learning about and find them very useful. Yes. They help me better understand the material. I have not really had any one on one contact with the professor. His examples of what is expected of you for projects. I really would not ask him to improve anything.
I believe the application of the material is always good so when we do cases and work through problems in class such as the pert chart ect. it helps me learn easier I dont know that these times were due to anything in class because i think the lectures are too the point and not long and drawn out but my most disengaged moments are in any class during lectures during times when i am exteremly tired anyways The cases are good and improve the learning experience by having us actually perform tasks and create things we are learning about in class. Actually doing something helps me understand much better than lecture the instructor has kept the lecures short and too the poing which i like and has also provided opportunity to have hands on experience with the work in order to better understand it. the one thing i would improve on would be that sometimes it is unclear what is asked for such as the progress presentation. i thought was more of updating him on our progress not so much doing half of the presentation which some groups did. But that may have just been my fault in misunderstanding and not asking
I enjoy the classroom discussions very much and learn a lot from them. You give very good examples and explanations, and you get the point across quite well. I also enjoy doing the assignments on a computer myself so that I retain it much better. It is, however, beneficial to have others in the group setting to ask questions or discuss the work as needed. I personally did not get as much out of the group presentations. I found them to be interesting and I heard some interesting facts; however, I did not learn as much as I did in the regular classroom setting. This answer pertains to me personally. I got much more out of doing the cases by myself than I did in a group. This is no reflection on others in the group. I just did not get an opportunity to participate in the case first hand and learn the hard way like I would have liked to. I know the importance of working in groups and communicating, and I have had an opportunity to do that many, many times in my career. I prefer to do my assignments myself and be graded accordingly. The group atmosphere is really helpful to discuss problems or questions we may have though. This probably is not the "right" answer, but it is honestly "my" answer. I have gotten a great deal out of the classroom setting, and also the questions and answers. The rest of my answer may get me brownie points, but it is honestly how I feel. I spent more hours than you could ever imagine on the group project. I worked very hard on the WIKI site and felt I was learning it. I also worked very hard on my presentation. I know I put in 20-30 hours researching. I am like most other people, and I do not like to speak publicly, but I was going to try, and I thought I was prepared to give it my best. I felt like I was spoken down to and made fun of before I even started, so all I wanted to do was hurry and get through it and sit down. You made some comments and said I had used up so much of my time already, so I hurried because of that. I guess I get my feelings hurt too easily. I left and cried the rest of the day, and decided to quit the class. I have a 4.0 average, and I gave it more thought in the next few days. I decided to give it my best. Maybe you could go easier on those of us who are more fragile. I also don't have as much interest in the project as I did because it didn't seem to help.
