Thesaurus of Parasitology
Description and Use
THE ALPHABETICAL DISPLAY
This section of the Thesaurus is a listing of all terms, both preferred
and non-preferred, in alphabetical order.
Each preferred term entry may have one or more of the following parts:
A VECTORS
B SN Organism which spreads a pathogen from
one host to another
C UF Paternetic Hosts
Transfer Hosts
D BT INDIRECT TRANSMISSION
E NT ALTERNATE VECTORS
EXPERIMENTAL VECTORS
PRIMARY VECTORRS
SECONDARY VECTORS
F RT VECTOR-BORNE DISEASES
A This is the main entry position for the preferred term. In this position, it will
always be in boldface capital letters.
B This is the scope note (SN) for the preferred term. It is used to define and
clarify the use of this term.
C This denotes any Used For (UF) term of an equivalence relationship. These
terms can be synonyms, near synonyms or quasi-synonyms. This relationships
is used often in this thesaurus for relating trade and generic drug names and
common and Latin organism names. These are the non-preferred terms which
make reference to this preferred term.
D This indicates terms broader than (BT) the main entry term. They represent a
term generic to the main entry term. Most preferred terms will have only one
BT term, unless they have more than one place in the hierarchical listing. Use
of a BT in searching leads to an increase in recall.
E This indicates terms narrower than (NT) the main entry term. They are more
specific than the main entry term. Use of an NT in searching leads to an
increase in precision. BT and NT are reciprocal relationships.
F This indicates terms which are related to (RT) the main entry term in a non-
generic/non-specific manner.
Each non-preferred term has an entry like the following:
G Transfer Hosts
H USE VECTORS
G This is a non-preferred term. It is distinguishable from a preferred term by
being in regular face and in lowercase letters.
H This denotes the preferred term which should be used instead of this non-
preferred term (USE). UF and USE are reciprocal relationships.
ALPHABETIZATION RULES
This thesaurus uses word by word alphabetization, according to the following rules:
1. Nothing comes before something. Spaces file before characters.
2. Numerals were ignored unless they were the distinguishing feature of the
terms. If this is the case, they were filed in numerical order.
USING THE HIERARCHICAL DISPLAY
This part of the thesaurus displays preferred terms groups as described by the BT-NT
relationships. Terms closer to the left hand margin, that is, those with fewer leader dots
are the broader terms. The more leader dots, the more specific the term.
