Gauguin Tahiti (1848 - 1903)

 

Paul Gauguin was born on June 7, 1848 in Paris.
1851-1855 : Lived in Lima, Peru.
1865-1871: traveled in the tropics.
1879-1886: Participated in every Impressionist exhibition.
1884: moved to Copenhagen and pursued a business career unsuccessfully.
1885: returned to Paris to paint full-time.
1885: met Edgar Degas.
1886: met Charles Laval and Emil Bernard in Pont-Aven and Vincent van Gogh in Paris.
1887: traveled to Panama and Martinique.
1889: organized a group exhibition at the Café Volpini in Paris (conjunction with the World's Fair).
1891: auctioned his paintings for a voyage to Tahiti.
1893: returned to Paris due to illness and started Noa Noa, a book about Tahiti.
1895: returned to Tahiti.
1898: attempted suicide after completing painting Where Do We Come From? Where Are We Coing?
1899: Championed the cause of French settlers in Tahiti in a Political journal, Les Guepes and founded periodical, Le Sourire. Other autobiographical writings are Cahier pour Aline (1892), L'Espirit moderne et le catholicisme (1897 and 1902) and Avant et après (1902).
1901: Moved to the Marquesas and died on May 8, 1903.
1906: His major work was held at the Salon d'Autornne in Paris.
