Claude Monet (1840 - 1926)

 

Claude Monet was born on November 14, 1840 in Paris, France.
Moved to Le HavreWhen at the age of five.
Receiving commission for his caricature work.
Spent in Le Havre.
Studied at the Atelier Suisse, Paris in 1859.
Entered the studio of Gleyre in Paris in 1862.
Took refuge in England during the Franco-Prussion War (1870-71)
During his stay in England he painted the Thames and London parks, studied the work of Constable and Turner and met the dealer Durnad-Ruel.
He painted some of the most famous works of the Impressionist movement at Argenteuil (a village near Paris) from 1871 to 1878.
Moved to Vetheuil in 1878.
Settled at Giverny (40 miles from Paris) in 1883.
Successful enough to buy a house in 1890.
Married his mistress in 1892 (three years before the wife's death).
From 1890 he painted the same subject in different light (different times of the day). Best known painting of that times are Haystacks or Grainstacks (1890-91) and Rouen Cathedral (1891-95).
The last important work was the Water Lily Pool.
