Practicum Objectives

My objectives for this Practicum are to gain practical experience in a digital library including:

• Management of content from scanning to html to metadata creation
• Development and usability of user interfaces
• Practical use of controlled vocabularies, authorities, and thesauri
• Familiarization with cataloging in a practical work environment
• Workflow processes in different areas (scanning, metadata, content management)
• Quality assurance of both content and accessibility

In addition, I want to focus on how to create a digital library system from the ground up. This also may include:

• Learning about the research, implementation, testing, customization, and development of open source software
• Decision making, prioritization, and working knowledge of content standards
• Long term digital preservation
• Administration and delegation of workflows
• Anything related to database administration or development
• Any aspect of digital libraries I was previously unaware of

I plan to do this starting the week of August 31, 2009 working between 15-20 hours a week until October 15, 2009. See the Daily Work Log next.
