Rationale & Learning Objectives: 
The ocean comprises about 70% of the Earth's surface area and plays a critical role in the cycling of energy and matter between the Earth's various physical, chemical and biological systems.  Despite this, many people are unaware of how this vast body of water impacts the world around them. 

1.  Students will take away with them an understanding of the basic principles of oceanography from geology, chemistry, physics and biology.

2.  Students will see how the sea "works" as a system.

3.  Students will be able to explain key processes, including coastal erosion, tides, surface circulation,  and thermohaline circulation.

4.  Students will learn how and where the ocean is most vulnerable to human impacts, and what the potential outcomes of human impact are on the sea and on human populations.

Registration Requirement

Registration Requirement: The official registration deadline for this course is January 27nd, 2013. University policy requires all students to be officially registered in each class they are attending. Students who are not officially registered for a course by published deadlines should not be attending classes and will not receive credit or a grade for the course. Each student must confirm enrollment by checking his/her class schedule (using Student Tools in FlashFast) prior to the deadline indicated. Registration errors must be corrected prior to the deadline.  The last date to drop this course is March 24th.
