I met with Ellen (assistant director) and discussed some questions I had regarding the EDGE assessment which Andi (director) gave me prior to the internship as a base line to start the project.
We discussed some of what the library currently does and does not do in regards to its public technology programs, services, and support.
I also met with Laura (adult services librarian / software) and discussed the EDGE assessment & general library employee relations & customer preferences.
We also discussed the importance of usability in regards to library services & websites.
With many of my questions answered between Ellen & Laura I will now be able to start planning the customer survey in regards to library tech. & services.

I met with Andi (director) and discussed more of the Edge benchmark info she had yet to send me.
I also took the “employee tech assessments” that Andi is having all the employees take to gauge where they currently stand in tech know how.
By taking these assessments I was able to see what kinds of questions were being asked and gain some understanding of where the staff would be coming from.
We (Andi & I) also discussed the upcoming survey we will be designing and I asked her to e-mail me any pertinent technology related info she may have so that I can start developing the survey questions.
We also decided that the survey should be finished by the end of May so that we have all of June to have people complete it, and all of July to analyze the data gathered.

I gathered census demographic data about the town of Falmouth for background information on the community.
I also developed a presentation containing information about the need to survey the community about the library (specifically the technology), the background demographics of the community, and the first draft of survey questions.
Andi said it was perfect to get the point, and idea, across to the board, and that we will also be presenting it to the library staff at the next staff meeting.
We are starting to weigh our options in regards to online delivery methods for the electronic version of the survey currently free service limitations vs. subscription fees are the points of consideration.
Also to better meet EDGE requirements for websites I’ve updated a list of college informational links, and the web team is deciding how best to go about using the one’s they wish to keep.

I reviewed the results of the staff members’ technology self-assessments.
There were three areas that appeared to require the most training: Mac OSX, Microsoft Excel, and Internet – Web – Social media privacy and security.
I developed a training presentation (via power point) for an Internet, Web, and Social media privacy and security training session…date to be determined. I began creating one for basic Excel functions.
I was also asked to review and add to the current library local history website I’m still gathering research toward this end.
I can utilize some of the demographics from the survey to get a “current” Falmouth feel to contrast the historical side of things.
On a side note Andi is meeting with the library board tonight and I’ll have a online survey package choice to work with by Wednesday.

I created draft online survey via Google Drive Forms, and draft print survey via Word.
I then sent both to library staff for review. I edited both drafts due to board member input and re-sent new drafts for additional review.
I completed the Excel training power point presentation. I also completed gathering up info for the current Falmouth local history web page.
We discussed working more on the website Monday, and making the survey live by next Wednesday.

I created training power point presentation about Mac computers for the staff.
I adjusted the look of the survey to address board members feelings that it didn’t “feel techy enough”.
I assessed where I was in comparison to the goals stated at the beginning of the internship & in the EDGE assessment requirements.
I met with Laura (Reference Librarian) to discuss what might be done to improve the website to bring it more in compliance with EDGE and or improve it based on customer & staff suggestions.
I’ve created a rough wireframe draft of a new Genealogy page & the Falmouth Local History page redo for the website.
I also completed a website inventory which I will turn into a site blueprint.
I will need to meet with Jeannie (Programming & Communications librarian) to discuss the libraries website needs more thoroughly and possibly aid in a potential new site design that will coincide with the future expansion of the library.

Completed a few final grammar adjustments to the online survey, and adjusted the print survey layout to match the “check box” style of the online version.
Both surveys should go live Monday – with the library boards’ final approval.
I completed the site blueprint in publisher, and I will meet with Jeannie on Monday to discuss the website further.
I received copies of all of the libraries technology policies, and met with Will (Children’s librarian & Library computer person) to discuss the libraries technology strategy plan(s) / if they had any.
All of this gathered tech info will be used to draft a new technology plan addendum to the strategic plan which is a requirement for the EDGE initiative.
Also added some additional to the draft of the future college info website page.

Made the online survey live today around noon, and had 30 respondents by 2:00.
I also printed copies of the survey for in library patron use as well.
Met with Jeannie to discuss the website plans future goals: responsive design, more targeted home screen (based on site analytics), and to update the look and feel of the site.
Gave Laura the info for the Genealogy, College, and Local Links (updates) website pages, and she’s making the live this week.
I also started working on the network drive (S: drive) mapping project as the file organization system has grown out of hand.
This drive mapping will be followed up with new “condensed” organization system suggestions.

Completed the (S: drive) network drive directory mapping, and gave a set of suggestions to condense and better organize this directory to attempt to prevent future problems.
I changed the libraries road side events signage for current events.
I reviewed internet privacy & security presentation in preparation for Friday’s staff meeting / training event.
I’ve also started compiling the survey results that have been gathered so far.

I covered the reference desk today which consisted of answering customer questions, and aiding them in finding the materials they were looking for.
I tallied the first 85 online survey responses and the first three print survey responses.
I also aided in a weeding project by comparing a list of material under consideration for weeding to the Fiction Core collection for public libraries catalog.

I tallied an additional 14 survey responses today. I completed the weeding project comparison to Fiction Core.
I was asked to aid in a computer inventory in July once the new computers have arrived.
I continued work on the Technology Strategic Plan for the EDGE requirement by gathering current background and technological standing information, but the required goals section will have to wait until after the survey is completed, tallied, and the results analyzed.

I tallied an additional 4 survey response today (total currently at 104).
I changed the libraries road side events signage for current events.
I re-did and continued work on the Technology Strategic Plan as a save error erased last Wednesdays work.
I also did research into automated computer inventory tools.
I retooled an existing Internet Connection Troubleshooting flow chart by updating and streamlining the process.

I tallied an additional 3 survey responses today (total currently at 107).
I continued working on the Technology Strategic Plan adding more detailed library background information, and a few more technology related policies.
I covered the reference desk while Laura was at a meeting.
I created a charts and graphs section for the survey results spreadsheet to allow for easier understanding of the quantitative parts of the survey.
I aided circulation in updating address information in patron records for those whom the library received returned mail.
I also aided Laura in reconfiguring the new books display area shelving.
The survey’s live time period is now half over and the numbers are already revealing some interesting trends that will be of use to the library in future planning and technological goal setting.

I covered the reference desk today: answered customer questions, helped locate materials, and assisted with technological difficulties they were having.
I conducted research into library websites and what users are looking to use them for.
I aided in retrieving data stored in the wireless door / people counter device – which consisted of finding the instructions of how to do so, downloading the data, and processing the report into a useable form.

I covered the children’s department today which consisted of: aiding patrons of all ages in finding materials, helping with the summer reading game (prizes, sign up, reading log sheets), shelving children’s materials, and answering patron questions.

I tallied more survey results today, and survey ends Wednesday.
I shifted materials from the program room back to the book sale areas after this weekend’s library activities.
I was asked to revamp the current statistics reporting method, and make it more automated where possible.
To do so: I converted the existing stats reporting sheets into a excel spreadsheet, created a sheet for each month, automated the completion of all totals, created a year to date page, and automated the population of data unto the library boards version of the monthly stats report;
this required me to create a board stats report sheet for each month.
I created graphs for all the library circulating item categories with the available data.

The technology survey ended today.
I began the survey response analysis today: Graphed quantitative responses, compiled qualitative responses into similar groups, and began creating a presentation for survey results based on the analysis so far.
I also started working with Ellen (assistant director) to create a supplies order tracking spreadsheet that would keep track of:
items ordered, price of each item, date ordered, total items per order, total cost per order, automatically computed monthly totals of dollars & items, and if possible keep a running yearly total.
As a bonus I was asked to attend an interesting African drumming program the library was hosting: African Drumming with Jordan Bennisan (http://www.falmouthmemoriallibrary.org/site/wp-content/uploads/Summer-2015corrected.pdf ) which made for a fun diversion from studying spreadsheets.

I completed the survey presentation today, and it will be a topic of discussion at the next staff meeting (Friday 7/24/2015).
I also completed the supplies order tracking spreadsheet for Ellen, it auto computes each item ordered by month, and per year; and it auto totals cost per order, per month, and per year.
Discussed the statistics reporting spreadsheets with Andi and preformed a few minor tweaks to compensate for new stats being tracked.
I made a plan with Andi to record audio segments, from home, for the staff training presentations I created earlier so that they can be used in the upcoming staff meeting even though I’m not able to attend due to a work scheduling conflict.
I also started working on a word cloud using the survey results for a catchy graphical depiction of the patron responses.

I worked from Home / Auburn Public Library this morning to record audio clips for the staff training presentations in regards to Excel, Mac’s, and Online Privacy.
I then added the audio clips to the power point presentations.
I later went to Falmouth Memorial Library and saved the new presentations so that staff could access them for training purposes.
I completed the word clouds for the survey results.
I also discovered and added more data to the new stats reporting spreadsheet.
I continued work on the Technology Plan (required for the EDGE initiative) by adding some of the survey results to it.

27-July-2015 (Monday) 9:30 – 4:30 (-30 Min for Lunch)

I covered the children’s area for an hour, helping patrons and shelving picture books.
I fixed some errors that were discovered in the new stats reporting files.
I configured a staff laptop to work with the door counter in order to save having to find tools to detach and then reattach the physical counter device in order to get data.
I tested the laptop for this use and retrieved the door counter stats for July in the process.
I researched 3D printer programming for libraries.
I also researched more on modern librarian skill and competencies requirements in regards to technology – WebJunction proved useful in this regard.

I trained the staff members, responsible for statistics, in how to use the new statistics reporting spreadsheets to record their monthly stats.
I researched and created a list of resources for training staff in regards to technological skill building.
I revised an earlier draft of a document designed to keep track of the libraries many online account login(s).
I helped a customer figure out how to work with their new android phones many features.

3-August-2015 (Monday) 9:30 – 4:30 (-30 Min for Lunch)

I aided in covering the circulation desk today.
This consisted of checking materials in and out, preparing ILL’s for the dept. head to pack and ship, aiding patrons in finding items, and helping with patrons with the photocopier & computer access.
I created a new statistics report to track the museum guest pass program usage.
I also researched ways to get library staff interested in learning new skills (that are required in this technological age), and library staff technological competencies training methods.

5-August-2015 (Wednesday) 9:30 – 4:30 (-30 Min for Lunch)

Today we (Andi & I) discussed staff training plans, and tools.
I then added a staff technology training section, and staff assessment segment, to the draft of the future Tech Plan.
(I also converted the draft plan from Publisher into Word for easier editing by staff in the future.)
I then conducted additional research into available technology training tools, sites, and resources online (all free).
I created a list of the resources I found, and a list of related articles and information that staff may find interesting in answering the “why” this is important type questions they may have.
I tried out Smarterer (from Google) a free technology skills assessment program, and I discovered this is a tool that could be used as a test for more advanced skills than the libraries current testing site of Northstar.
This will allow for ongoing technology assessments and skill building.

10-August-2015 (Monday) 9:30 – 4:30 (-30 Min for Lunch)

Andi and I discussed the internship assessments we gave each other.
I gathered the door count statistics from the door count device, and added the numbers for the month of July to the statistics report sheet.
I corrected some equation errors in the automated library board report stats sheet (discovered due to the door count addition).
I aided in Inter Library Loan by packing the out bound items and preparing them to be taken by the currier.
I instructed a patron (walked them through) in how to get pictures from their android phone into an e-mail message, and I helped them updated their computer.

12-August-2015 (Wednesday) 9:30 – 4:30 (-30 Min for Lunch)

I set up two new public internet access computers which consisted of: configuring the log in information, configuring the desktop icons and background,
adjusting the settings on the internet browsers (Firefox & Chrome) to improve security, installing the networked printer drivers,
and installing the software used to prevent the computer from being altered permanently by patrons.
I also compared a list of card holders and their e-mail addresses with a list of bounced e-mail address messages received by the library staff.
All bounced addresses were removed from the system. I helped a patron update Firefox on their laptop and helped them set up a Gmail address.
I turned in all of my work to Andi along with the current version of the Technology Plan that is set up and ready for the additions of their technology goals,
goals measuring techniques, and time tables to complete it. All of this made for a very interesting last day.
