VCA video View

This project was a collaborative effort between the music teacher at Valley Christian Academy and myself. I have an interest in music and desired to see how we could use technology in a music teaching setting. The project that we settled on was a multimedia project in which the fifth grade students would illustrate part of a hymn, in this case "How Great Thou Art," and perform the hymn to be audio and video recorded. Each of these parts, the images, audio and video would be combined into a movie. The students created the images in PowerPoint. Each slide was then saved as a JPEG image and imported into Windows Movie Maker. The students performed the song and the audio was recorded with Audacity. I video taped the performance twice, once to get a wide shot and again to get close-up shots. The audio clips were then processed and imported in to Movie Maker as MP3 files. Finally, I imported some of the video clips that I had taken to intersperse with the images that the students had created. I began putting all these pieces together. One difficulty that I ran into was matching the timing of the video clips with the audio clip that I had recorded. I found it nearly impossible to synchronize. This is one thing that I would change if I had the time and patience, but the end product is still strong in spite of it. One of the strengths of the project was that it allowed the students to exercise their creativity. The students were able to create an image from what they were hearing and singing. It reinforced what they had been learning about in music class and facilitated the use of technology in their learning.

Tech day ViewDownload PDF

This exhibit is one of the assignments that I completed during one of my classes at Kent State University. For this project we were to work in groups to create a "tech day" in which every class taught the same concept and employed technology in some way. We then had to determine and support the conclusion of the use of technology being something that was, "tried and true" or "new and innovative". As a group we created lessons for each subject around an Earth and Space theme. In each lesson we attempted to incorporate technology where it was appropriate and where it would enhance student learning. This was more difficult in some areas compared to others, but we were successful in the end.
