Upon successful completion of the course, students will be able to explain, in terms of the discipline, origins of social problems, i.e., the nature and theoretical interpretations of the "undesirable state of affairs" and various methods with which people deal with them and the subsequent implications. This will involve lectures and discussions on the readings with relating and equating to everyday interaction. Of interest will be investigating life as a process of contentious value judgments and serendipitous development of problems originating in social structure itself. Students are expected to actively participate in discussions and respect other's opinions.

Four exams demonstrating an applied knowledge of class material with the average of the four being the final grade. Standards for grading will be discussed. Topics for exams are announced ahead of time with students having the option to take the exam in-class or submit a paper at exam time.  Failure to attend four classes will result in the final grade being reduced by 1/3. Miss 1/2 the classes - fail. (Advanced courses require consistent, active participation often with lively and adult dialogue.) Extra credit is NOT granted in Dr Jack's courses because 1. it is not an equitable procedure and 2. in many cases it is considered academic blackmail
