Catullus 77

Catullus attacks his former friend M. Caelius Rufus, who apparently became involved with Lesbia after the death of her husband and shortly after the termination of Catullus' affair with her.

Rufe mihi frustra ac nequiquam credite amice
(frustra? immo magno cum pretio atque malo),
sicine subrepsti mi, atque intestina perurens
ei misero eripuisti omnia nostra bona?
eripuisti, heu heu nostrae crudele venenum..............5
vitae, heu heu nostrae pestis amicitiae.

Meter: elegiacs.
1. credite: perfect passive participle in the vocative modifying Rufe; 
amice: adverbial form of amicus.
3. subrepsti: subrepsisti. "Have you thus...?"
4. ei misero: Dative of Reference with intestina.
5. crudele venenum: modifies Rufe, the subject of eripuisti.
