Instructor’s resources for ALEKS courses at Stark

·         Stark math faculty resources  (course descriptions, learning outcomes, publishers, academic calendar,…)

·         The syllabus template and quizzes for 2014 are in the Blackboard Learn course “MATH-00020-24: ALEKS Course material for Stark”.
To get permission e-mail request to: thrubik@kent.edu

·         Kent web-site for ALEKS courses (see ALEKS Docs, and How-To Docs).  Observe that Kent deals with large numbers of students in each emporium session and because of that their procedures are different from the ones at Stark. At Stark we have a classroom setting and additional open-labs.

·         Stark web-site for 2013 ALEKS courses

·         Good videos that can be used along with ALEKS videos: www.virtualnerd.com  and www.khanacademy.org

How to help students get into the fall back sections

You can check maximum number of seats and available seats in your courses at Class Schedule Search (select the appropriate term, mathematics, undergraduate, Stark, appropriate session H1 or H2, your name as an instructor). You can print that list too to have it as a reference.

In H2 each ALEKS time slot has the fall back and subsequent ALEKS sections. At the beginning of the semester (H1), subsequent sections in H2 must be large to accommodate all students who plan to take two ALEKS courses (they register for both).  At that time the fall back sections must be small to keep total number of students in the class under 40.

After the exams in H1, fall back caps must be increased and regular decreased. The numbers very for each section so the students run into closed sections because caps have been reached.

To help students with this you can:

·         Ask students to deregister from the subsequent course and register for the fall back section right after the exam (before they leave the class).

·         If the student is freshmen or caps have already been reached you can give him/her filled form to take to the student services.  This will allow them to register for your fall back section regardless of the current caps (caps at that moment could be not adjusted yet, or not adjusted high enough).
