Monument over a Chamber

Go Back to Step 4: Miniature Columbaria     Return to the Project Overview        Move on to Step 4: Monuments

This type of monument is a combination of the funerary altar and the columbarium.  Instead of building a mock house in which to store the ashes, a simple chamber was constructed for the urns and sarcophagi and some kind of monumen was placed on top.  This type of monument is especially common in Pompeii where the population was less concentrated than what is found in Ostia.

Chamber in the bottom of the monument would be a simple brick construcion with space for 1-6 burials.

Because these monument incorporate a much more ornate and expensive top, they are more expensive than columbaria of the same square footage.

You can purchase these in three base sizes:

You can face the base with marble for double the cost (e.g. 350,000 small brick base would be 700,000 for the small brick base faced with marble).

On top of the chamber would go the ornamental monument.  This can come in two varities: brick and marble.

The cost of this monument would be the price of the chamber plus the cost of the monument on top.  For example, the medium monument pictured to the right would cost 2,800,000 sestertii (400,000 for the base (unfaced) and 2,400,000 for the marble altar on top)

This type of monument also frequently incorporated relief sculture portraits.  These can be added for an additonal fee to either the marble or brick top monument.

The door of the monument is not always clearly visible from the front as the importance of the monument is the facade rather than the chamber.

There is no restriction on the inscription that would be placed on the front of the monument.  In the case of a marble monument, the inscription would usually appear on the monument.
