Class Time: Thursdays 5:30pm-8:15pm

Office Hours:

·        Thursday after class

·        Set appointment by Email for Skype, Google Chat or in person meetings for any other times

Objective

The fundamental objective is for you to develop an appreciation for the contribution that computers and software can make to your life as a student and as a professional. It is expected that during this term you will develop competency in the operation of the computer programs to which you are exposed. It is further expected that as you master the course material your confidence and productivity will increase.

Sources of Information

No textbook is required for this course. You have five main sources of information for this course:

·         Class lecture / discussion

·         Course Notes

·         Me (email me with questions or visit me)

·         Online material

Other Materials

·         Microsoft Office

For this course you will use software including Microsoft Office (2007 or 2010). Office may be used on your computer if you have it or in the College of Business computer lab or other labs on campus.

If you do not have Office installed but would like it you can obtain a 60 day trial copy from www.microsoft.com for free. NOTE: many computers have Office without Access. You will need Access for this course.

You can purchase Office for a special price here:http://www.kent.edu/is/helpdesk/microsoft.cfm

Course Structure

The class is scheduled to meet once a week on Thursdays evening from 5:30pm-8:15pm. However, due to the strong emphasis on assignments and the practice focus of the class, the class only meets every other Thursdays. On the alternate weeks (when class is not met), students are expected to complete assignments given in class. To guide students in the assignments, the instructor will send links to videos that will recap what was discussed in class and will give directions and aid to complete the assignment. See the Schedule below for dates when the class meets.

Warning: Only the application usage will be included in the videos. Any lecture or PowerPoint presentation slides that may be discussed in class will not be included in the videos. Relying only on the information sent in the videos presumably will not be sufficient to receive an A in the class.

Note Taking

A number of students will be required to take notes in each class and make their notes publicly available for other students through Dropbox (scanned or typed documents). Each student will be assigned to a class when they are required to take comprehensive notes of the material covered that day. This will count 5% towards the students’ grade. Students, who are scheduled to take notes are also expected to be fully prepared from last class as the review of previous class will include their feedback and comments.

Your Grade

Projects

·         Homework

The projects are built on homework assignments. While homework is not graded, they are cumulative works, which eventually evolve into your projects. The instructor will monitor your progress and will help as needed. If you are unable to proceed with a particular assignment in spite of honest attempts, please contact the instructor for further assistance. Be proactive!

You are responsible for properly using Dropbox (see details below), the file sharing application. Homework, projects can only be “submitted” through Dropbox. I will not accept email attachments, printed copies… etc.

·         Project

The projects are conclusive works of each major subject. They will involve homework assignments, a conclusive write up and questions in regards to the subjects covered, discussed and practiced in class.

Participation

While class attendance is not mandatory, it is strongly encouraged to be present to fully understand the material. The projects will include questions, which are discussed, practiced in class and will not be covered in recap videos in great detail. (See Course Structure for recap videos)

Dropbox

Assignments will be distributed to the students through Dropbox, which is a file sharing and online backup application. You may download it from www.dropbox.com. It will be demonstrated and discussed in first class. Homework and projects will be saved in the Dropbox folder, so that the instructor can monitor them at anytime.

Cheating and Plagiarism

Academic honesty: Cheating means to misrepresent the source, nature, or other conditions of your academic work (e.g., tests, papers, projects, assignments) so as to get undeserved credit.   In addition, it is considered to be cheating when one cooperates with someone else in any such misrepresentation.  The use of the intellectual property of others without giving them appropriate credit is a serious academic offense.  It is the University's policy that cheating or plagiarism result in receiving a failing grade for the work or course.  Repeat offenses result in dismissal from the University.

Disabled Students

University policy 3342-3-01.3 requires that students with disabilities be provided reasonable accommodations to ensure their equal access to course content. If you have a documented disability and require accommodations, please contact the instructor at the beginning of the semester to make arrangements for necessary classroom adjustments. Please note, you must first verify your eligibility for these through Student Accessibility Services (contact 330-672-3391 or visit www.kent.edu/sas for more information on registration procedures).

Official Registration

Students have responsibility to ensure they are properly enrolled in classes.  You are advised to review your official class schedule (using Student Tools on FlashLine) during the first two weeks of the semester to ensure you are properly enrolled in this class and section.  Should you find an error in your class schedule it is your responsibility to correct the error.  If registration errors are not and you continue to attend and participate in classes for which you are not officially enrolled, you are advised now that you will not receive a grade at the conclusion of the semester for any class in which you are not properly registered.
