Community Outreach
Abey Research Group
To   assist   high   schools   in   nearby   communities   to   improve   their   quality   of   science education,    we    plan    to    hold    a    one-week    experimental    biochemistry    and biophysics    workshop    for    high    school    students    and    their    teachers    during summer   (pending   availability   of   funding).   A   maximum   of   12   students   and   4 teachers   can   be   accommodated   in   the   workshop   each   year.   We   plan   to   give hands-on   experience   in   basic   experimental   biochemistry   (such   as   PCR,   RNA and   protein   preparations,   and   chromatography)   to   participants.   Both   graduate student    and    undergraduate    students    will    conduct    laboratory    sessions    as teaching   assistants   under   the   supervision   of   the   PI   providing   undergraduate students the opportunity to gain teaching experience.
Keshav    and    Sean    from Abey     lab     demonstrate how   to   extract   DNA   from strawberries    at    Explore Chemistry   at   Kent   State University.
