This painting is considered the chief work of art of the Museo del
Prado and it is also the masterpiece of Spanish painting and one of the
jewels of the art world. The painter himself appears in his work and in
the mirror on the far wall is the reflection of King Philip IV and Queen
Marianna of Austria. The scene, which takes place in Velázquez's studio,
is made up of a group of figures surrounding Princess Margaret, who at
that moment was the heir to the throne due to the passing of Prince
Baltasar Carlos. She is surrounded by, served and accompanied by her Maids
of Honor. Apart from the beauty of this work, Velázquez's greatest success
is the reproduction of the air and the atmosphere there is among the
figures in the painting, a feature he reflects by dispersing the profiles
and diminishing the colors of the figures in the farthest background area
in order to make them look real. |

Es ésta la obra príncipe del Museo del Prado y de la pintura
española, y una de las cotas más altas de la pintura universal. Incluído
el propio pintor en la composición, se nos ofrece retratando a los reyes
Felipe IV y Mariana de Austria, cuyas efigies se reflejan en el espejo del
fondo. La escena, que se desarrolla en el propio estudio de Velázquez, la componen
un grupo de figuras en torno a la infanta niña Margarita, en ese momento
heredera de la corona por desaparición del príncipe Baltasar Carlos.
Meninas y meninos la rodean, atienden y acompañan. Aparte de la belleza de
esta composición, su logro más extraordinario es la captación del aire, de
la atmósfera que se interpone entre los cuerpos de los personajes, y que
Velázquez logra pintar desdibujando los perfiles y matizando los colores
de las figuras colocadas más lejos, para que aparezcan a los ojos del
espectador tal y como podrían ofrecérsele en la realidad. |
