Ultimate Frisbee

Unit Plan

Physical Education

3rd and 4th Grade

Ashley Kuban

Needs Assessment:

The students in Mrs. Close’s physical education classes have not done an Ultimate Frisbee unit yet this year.  This will be their first team sport unit as well.  The students will need to learn basic Frisbee throwing and catching techniques along with offensive tactics such as moving forward towards the end zone and off-the-ball movements.  The students will also need to learn the basic rules in order to referee.  There is some arguing among some of the students, so stressing the use of ‘rock, paper, scissors’ to handle disagreements and clearly defining the rules and conditions of the game will be important in this unit.

Management Plan

EntryMrs. Close had established “squad dots” on the gym floor and each student has their own spot that they sit at upon entry.  The squad dots create lines of students and each student in the line has their own role.  There will be different colored shapes around the room and these spots will designate the home court for each team.

ExitThe homeroom teachers prefer their students in two single file lines (a boy line and a girl line).  The students will line up at the door in these lines and be released to their homeroom teacher.

Equipment Routines: (distribution, during activity, collection):

  • Music
  • CD player
  • Stretch cards
  • Foam Frisbees and regular Frisbees
  • Cones for end zones
  • Floor tape to separate team courts

Distribution: The Frisbees will be placed in a basket on the steps of the stage.  The equipment managers from each team will be responsible to distribute the Frisbees for their team when instructed.

During Activity: When they hear the word “freeze”, the students will stop what they are doing place the Frisbees by their feet.

Collection: The equipment managers (3rd and 4th) will collect the equipment used by their team and return it to the stage.

Restroom/Drink Procedures:

The students may use the restroom that is right outside the door and get a drink from the gym water fountain one at a time when given permission.  Typically, the students are given a restroom break right after or right before physical education by their homeroom teacher.

Classroom Rules: (Mrs. Close’s rule posters)

·         Gym shoes are required.

·         Quiet when entering and leaving the gymnasium.

·         No gym or candy in the mouth.

·         Be careful when in motion!

·         When the whistle blows, stop and listen.

·         Play by the rules.

Consequences:

1. Teacher Look

2. Proximity Control

3. Verbal Warning (1st strike)

4. Verbal Warning (2nd strike)

5. Time-out on stage (3rd strike)

6. Meeting with Principle/call home

Rewards:

1. Smiling

2. Clapping

3. High five

4. Positive reinforcement

5. Piece of candy

6. Sticker

7. Positive call home

Grouping:

The students will be at their squad dots when given instructions for the warm-up.  They will also return to their squad dots when they need refocused.  The students will be within their home courts for this unit.

Unit Specific Rules: (Safety Considerations)

  1. If a Frisbee goes into another’s court, wait until they have stopped game play before you enter their court to retrieve it.
  2. If a Frisbee enters your court, hand it to the team who lost it rather than trying to throw it back to them.
  3. When holding the Frisbee, the students will not take any steps.
  4. Warm defense- one arm’s length away

Emergency Procedures:

Tornado and fire drill posters are posted throughout the gym.  In case of a fire, the students will line up at the back door, exit into the parking lot, and face the school.

Transitions:

“When I say Go..” will be used to initiate movement

When the students hear “Freeze” or the stoppage of music, they will stop and freeze exactly where they are.

Terminal Unit Goal

The students will be able to reach the end zone in Ultimate Frisbee by utilizing various passing forms (overhand pass, wrist pass, shovel pass, jump pass) to move forward up court.  They will also prevent scoring by playing warm defense (1 arm’s length away) to defend the end zone in a 3v3 setting by the end of the unit. (P) (NASPE 1)

The students will demonstrate tactical awareness by recognizing tactical problems (attacking the goal, creating space, maintaining possession, defending space) and articulating both the on-the-ball skills (short, quick passes, lead passes, give and go, warm defense) and off-the-ball movements (moving to open space, cutting) needed to solve them through exit slips at the end of some lessons. (C) (NASPE 2)

The students will demonstrate self-responsibility by fulfilling their roles on the team contract (coach meeting at coaches corner, equipment manager attaining equipment for team, trainer leading team in warm-up) upon entry into the gym, and they will exhibit socially acceptable behavior and demonstrate positive examples of fair play by settling disagreements quickly by utilizing “rock, paper, scissors” during game play. (A) (NASPE 5, 6)

Sport citizenship

Hellison’s Model

Team Contract:

1.         Appropriate sport behavior

2.        Fair play

3.        Hard work

4.        Cooperation

5.        Respect

6.       Positive Attitude

7.        Responsibility

Coach:  Meets at coaches’ corner at the beginning of class to find out lesson focus.  Relay’s information to teammates.  Settles disagreements during game play by using “rock, paper, scissors”.

Athletic Trainer:  Chooses 2 arm and 2 leg stretches from the stretch cards and gets the team stretching after the warm-up.

Equipment Manager:  Gives out pinnies to teammates.  Collects pinnies at the end of class and puts them back into a neat pile on the bleachers.

Media Reporter:

Takes pictures when team is referring when they see  a give and go or a type of pass (will depend on content learned in the lesson)

During final class tournament:

Scorekeeper: keeps correct score of the game using the score board.

Commentator:  Uses the microphone to describe the play by plays of the game to the audience in a positive and respectful manner.

Level 0:  Irresponsibility

·      Does not want to participate

·      Takes responsibility for actions (admits when they knock the ball out, admits if they foul the opponent, etc.)

Level 4:  Caring

·      Participates  above and beyond expectations

·      Leads the group (goes to coaches’ corner and then relays the message, resolves conflict through “rock, paper, scissors” without being told by the teacher).

Assessment Plan

Pre-assessment:

I will observe the students throwing and catching the frisbee with their teammates.  I will see what modifications in equipment (if any) that I will need to make.

During lesson:

I will use questions throughout the lesson that aid in measuring the students’ understanding of the various balances and rotations. To assess frisbee throwing and catching, support, and decision-making criteria on an on-going basis, a skill checklist should be utilized and be focused upon one court (2 teams) during a lesson.
