Assignment: Write a 500 word (one single spaced page) critical summary of an article or book chapter and then assesses the value of that article to others concerned about the same critical problem.

Format: Use the MLA Handbook for formatting guidelines. Include a descriptive title and Works Cited page.


Contents:
These guidelines are not a recipe. They are designed only to tell you what rhetorical "work" the paper must do. You should organize the material so that it is as effective as you can make it.

I. Opening Paragraphs

    • Identify the object of study by author and title
    • Identify the critical problem(s) the writer is addressing
    • State clearly the major claim(s) the writer is making
II. Summarizing Paragraphs
    • Delineate the arguments of the article logically
    • Offer, in the course of delineating the argument, examples of the writer's data and warrants
III. Critique Paragraphs
    • Explain the significance of this article (how well does the article resolve the critical problem?)
    • Assess the utility of the article for those interested in the critical problem
    • Note what further work that might be done on this critical problem
Relative Lengths: Section A is 10%; B is 70%; C is 20%.
