bible as literature :: syllabus

summer one, 2005
9.45-11.40 am monday to thursday

The Course: The Bible as Literature is a study of the Bible in English. Our emphasis, as the course title suggests, will be on the literary qualities of the Bible, rather than on its religious, sectarian, or ethical qualities. Our literary examination will include authorship, historical context, aspects of language, genres, and biblical "poetics." Because reading this text intensely would take much longer than a semester, we will focus on particular passages intensely within broader reading.

Texts:
The New Oxford Annotated Bible, 3rd ed.
Gibaldi. MLA Handbook for Writers of Research Papers. 6th ed. (recommended.)

Papers, Exams, etc.:

Students will participate in several short online exercises and two longer exercises; one final examination covering all the material of the course (including short answer essay and identification); and online reflections after every class session.

Grading:
Short online work will count a total of 25%, longer exercises will count 25%; reflections 15%; examination 40%.
