| Friday: This will be our first full-day trip. After
breakfast, we will leave Rome by bus and travel to the nearby city of Ostia,
ancient Rome’s port city. Often called the “Pompeii of the North”, this
large, well-preserved ancient site gives its visitors a real taste of what
life in a Roman city was like. You can stroll down streets with two- and
three-story buildings on either side, walk through the ancient public baths,
visit a subterranean temple to the god Mithras, sit in the theater, and go
inside both the grand houses of the Roman elite as well as the tiny
apartments of the lower classes. We will visit some of the most important
parts as a group, but much of the time will be yours to explore the city on
your own. |
