About Us
Our History - PRIDE was created in 1970 directly following the Stonewall Riots in New York city. It is the second oldest LGBT college organization, behind UC Berkeley, in the country. In its rich history, PRIDE! Kent has undergone five name changes. It was originally called Gay Liberation Front (a more severe name to parallel the movement of the seventies).
About PRIDE! Kent - Although human experience is as vastly different as we are individually, we find joy and comfort in our common humanity. We recognize that the inherent basic rights of all human beings have not always been respected due to the prejudice, ignorance, and fear, which results in oppression. The members to the PRIDE! Kent pledge ourselves to the employment of legitimate and nonviolent means to achieve lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and queer equality and liberation, as well as the equality and liberation of ALL people as best as we are able.
This organization addresses the importance of equal rights of all people through attaining undeniable liberties currently not offered to lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgendered, and other sexual and gender minorities, as well as addressing other inequalities regardless of race, gender, sexual orientation, class, ethnicity, etc., that might occur on campus and in society. We open our doors to all people to come and join.
