| Tuesday: After breakfast, we will travel to the southern environs of Rome to see some of the important tomb monuments along the Via Latina. We will see two columbaria, subterranean burial chambers, which were used by aristocratic families for burying members of their servile household staffs. |

| We will also see the Tomb of the Scipios, the burial chambers for the ancestors and descendents of Publius Cornelius Scipio Africanus, the man who defeated the Carthaginian general Hannibal. |

| From there, we will head down to the Via Appia to the Catacombs of Domitilla, one of the nicest catacombs in Rome. There, we will wander through the endless subterranean corridors the Romans used for burying the dead and the Christians used as hiding places from imperial persecutions. |

| We will then tour a stretch of the Via Appia which still preserves the original paving and numerous tombs along the side of the road. |
